Ingredients

  • 8 slices of sourdough bread
  • 1 lb deli ham
  • 1 lb Swiss cheese, thinly sliced
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup spicy pickles, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Lay out four slices of bread on a clean surface. Spread a layer of mayo on one side of each slice. In a small bowl, combine the chopped spicy pickles with garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  2. On two of the mayonnaise covered slices, evenly distribute half of the deli ham. On the other two, place half of the Swiss cheese.
  3. Place a slice of bread with mayonnaise on top of each ham filled slice, mayonnaise side down. Then, put a slice with just Swiss cheese on top of each sandwich made in step 3, also mayo side down.
  4. In a large pan or grill, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Once melted, add two sandwiches to the pan and cook for 2 3 minutes per side, until golden brown and cheese is melted. Repeat with remaining butter and sandwiches.

Chef’s Insight

The combination of smoky, crispy bread and melty, gooey cheese creates an irresistible taste sensation. The contrast between the crusty exterior and tender interior adds to the allure.

Notes

Feel free to adjust the spiciness of the pickles according to your preference. Adding more or less garlic powder also adds variety to the dish.

Cultural or Historical Background
