  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 tablespoons Smoky BBQ Sauce (recipe below)
  • 2 slices of American cheese
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 lettuce leaves
  • 1 tomato, sliced Smoky BBQ Sauce:
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon molasses
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon liquid smoke
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, mix together all the ingredients for the Smoky BBQ Sauce. Set aside.
  2. Cook the bacon in a large pan over medium heat until crispy. Remove from pan and set aside. Reserve 2 tablespoons of bacon grease in the pan.
  3. Divide the ground beef into four equal portions, shaping each portion into a thin patty. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  4. In the same pan used for cooking the bacon, add the patties and cook over medium heat for 5 minutes on each side or until cooked to your desired preference. During the last minute of cooking, brush both sides of the patties with the Smoky BBQ Sauce.
  5. Add the cheese slices on top of the patties during the last minute of cooking to melt them. Remove patties from pan and set aside.
  6. In the same pan, add the onion slices and cook over medium heat until caramelized, about 10 minutes.
  7. To assemble the burgers, place each patty on a bun bottom, top with caramelized onions, lettuce, tomato slice, bacon, and a generous drizzle of Smoky BBQ Sauce. Add the top bun and serve immediately.
