Ingredients

  • 8 oz ground beef 4 oz button mushrooms, thinly sliced 1/2 medium onion, thinly sliced 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/3 cup soy sauce 1/4 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup rice wine vinegar 2 tablespoons sesame oil 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional) Salt, to taste 2 cups cooked white rice 2 green onions, chopped 2 tablespoons sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef and minced garlic. Shape into two 1 inch thick patties. Set aside.
  2. In another bowl, mix together soy sauce, brown sugar, rice wine vinegar, sesame oil, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Divide half of the mixture in a shallow dish. Marinate both sides of beef patties for 15 20 minutes.
  3. In a medium bowl, mix together sliced mushrooms and onions with the remaining marinade. Set aside.
  4. Preheat a grill or grill pan to medium high heat. Grill beef patties to desired doneness, about 4 5 minutes per side for medium. Remove from heat and let rest for 3 minutes.
  5. Grill marinated mushrooms and onions until tender, about 2 3 minutes per side.
  6. Divide cooked white rice between two bowls, top with grilled beef patties, grilled mushrooms, and onions. Sprinkle with green onions and sesame seeds. Serve immediately.

Chef’s Insight

For added heat, mix in some gochujang (Korean red chili pepper paste) into the marinade.

Notes

For an extra smoky flavor, add a touch of liquid smoke to the marinade.
