Ingredients

  • 1. 2 cups corn flour (masarepa) 2. 2 cups warm water 3. 1/4 teaspoon salt 4. 3 tablespoons vegetable oil 5. 1 cup dulce de leche 6. Optional: Whipped coconut cream for serving

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the corn flour and warm water until well combined.
  2. Add salt and stir in the vegetable oil.
  3. Divide the mixture into 6 equal portions and shape each portion into a round disc about 1/2 inch thick.
  4. Heat a non stick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Cook the arepas for about 5 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and slightly crispy on the outside.
  5. Cut a slit in the center of each warm arepa and fill it with a generous spoonful of dulce de leche.
  6. Serve immediately, optionally accompanied by a dollop of whipped coconut cream.

Chef’s Insight

Be sure not to overmix the corn flour and water mixture, as this can lead to dense, less desirable arepas.

Notes

You can also use a food processor to mix the arepa dough, but be careful not to overmix.

Cultural or Historical Background

Arepas are a staple food in Venezuelan cuisine, traditionally served as a side dish with various savory fillings. The sweet version, filled with dulce de leche, is a popular dessert option.
