Aurora’s Frostbitten Fantasy
About This Recipe
A Nordic-inspired cocktail combining aquavit with cold brew coffee and a homemade ginger-peppermint syrup. The layered drink balances warm spice notes against a cold, coffee-forward base.
This drink pays homage to the Nordic tradition of warming up with cold drinks during harsh winters.
Ingredients
- 2 fl oz aquavit
- 1 fl oz cloud forest syrup (see syrup instructions)
- 4 fl oz cold brew coffee, caffeine-free
- 1 fl oz lemon juice, freshly squeezed
- crushed ice
- 1 lemon peel twist, for garnish
- 1 cup sugar (for cloud forest syrup)
- 1 cup water (for cloud forest syrup)
- 2 tsp ginger, finely grated (for cloud forest syrup)
- 1/4 tsp sea salt (for cloud forest syrup)
- 2 drops peppermint essential oil (for cloud forest syrup)
Instructions
- 1
Combine sugar and water in a small saucepan over medium heat until sugar is dissolved. Add ginger, sea salt, and peppermint oil. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and let it simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and cool to room temperature before straining and bottling.
- 2
In a cocktail shaker, combine Aquavit, Cloud Forest Syrup, and Lemon Juice with crushed ice. Shake vigorously until well-chilled.
- 3
In a glass, pour the Cold Brew Coffee over fresh crushed ice to chill it.
- 4
Double strain the Aquavit mixture into the coffee, creating a delightful swirl of color.
- 5
Garnish with a lemon peel twist, expressing its zest above the surface before dropping it in.
Chef's Notes
For a more potent flavor, consider infusing the Aquavit with spices like star anise or juniper berries.
Plating Tips
Serve in a tall, clear glass to showcase the layered coffee-and-spirit swirl. Express the lemon peel twist over the surface so the oils catch the light, then perch it on the rim.
