Ingredients

  • 2 lbs boneless pork shoulder
  • 1 cup BBQ sauce (your favorite brand)
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup bourbon
  • 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbsp chili powder
  • 2 tbsp paprika
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp onion powder
  • 1 tbsp ground cumin
  • 1 tbsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 8 slider buns, split and toasted

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the BBQ sauce, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, honey, bourbon, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, ground cumin, dried oregano, and cayenne pepper (if using). Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
  2. Place the pork shoulder in a slow cooker and pour the BBQ sauce mixture over it. Turn to coat evenly. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours or high for 4 hours, until the meat is tender and easily shreds with a fork.
  3. Remove the pork from the slow cooker and shred it using two forks, discarding any excess fat. Return the shredded pork to the slow cooker and stir well, coating it in the sauce. Cover and cook on low for an additional 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  4. Preheat a grill or grill pan to medium high heat. Transfer the pulled pork to the grill or pan and sear it, stirring occasionally, until heated through and slightly charred, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat.
  5. Spoon the seared pulled pork onto the toasted slider buns and serve immediately with additional BBQ sauce on the side, if desired.

Chef’s Insight

For an added smoky flavor, try using a smoker box or wood chips with your grill or stovetop smoker.
