Allergens

Nuts, Eggs (in phyllo dough)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup gluten
  • free phyllo dough (25 sheets)
  • 1 cup crushed nuts (almonds, walnuts, or pecans)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/2 lemon, juiced

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x9 inch square baking pan.
  2. Unroll the phyllo dough and cover with a damp cloth to prevent drying out. Place one sheet of phyllo in the prepared pan, letting excess hang over sides. Brush with butter and repeat until all sheets are used, stacking about 5 layers for each pastry square.
  3. In a bowl, mix crushed nuts, sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Sprinkle half of this mixture evenly over the top layer of phyllo in the pan.
  4. Cut the layered dough into 9 equal squares, then cut each square diagonally to form 2 triangles. Brush the top layer with butter and sprinkle remaining nut mixture on top.
  5. Bake for 20 25 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven and let cool slightly.
  6. In a saucepan, combine water, honey, and lemon juice. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 3 minutes.
  7. Pour the hot honey mixture over the warm baklava bites and allow them to soak for about 5 minutes before serving.
