1. 10 sheets filo pastry 2. 1 cup finely chopped nuts (walnuts or almonds) 3. 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted 4. 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 5. 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves 6. 1 cup granulated sugar 7. 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice 8. 1/2 cup honey 9. 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C).
Lightly brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with some of the melted butter.
Lay one sheet of filo pastry on the bottom of the dish and gently press it down. Repeat for the next four sheets, brushing each with melted butter and lightly spraying the top of each layer with water.
In a medium bowl, mix together the chopped nuts, cinnamon, and cloves. Sprinkle half of this mixture evenly over the layers of filo pastry.
Layer another five sheets of filo pastry on top, brushing each with melted butter and lightly spraying the top of each layer with water. Evenly sprinkle the remaining nut mixture on top.
Cut the baklava into 12 equal squares using a sharp knife.
Bake for 30 35 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly.
In a small saucepan, combine sugar, lemon juice, honey, and vanilla extract. Stir over low heat until the sugar dissolves.
Pour the hot syrup evenly over the baklava squares, making sure to cover every piece. Let it sit for 1 2 hours before serving to allow the syrup to soak in.
Chef’s Insight
To enhance the aroma, use organic lemon juice and honey for a stronger, more natural flavor.
Notes
For a vegan version, replace the honey with maple syrup or agave nectar, and use dairy-free butter.
