Sink your teeth into tender bao buns filled with juicy beef patties, gooey cheese, crunchy slaw, and a smoky sauce that will make you feel like you're at a Friday-night tailgate or enjoying a secret restaurant hack at home.

The Grilled Cheeseburger Bao Buns recipe was inspired by the American classic cheeseburger and fries, combined with the Chinese steamed bun (bao) popular in street food culture.

Ingredients

  • 4 large bao buns
  • 2 beef patties (6 oz each)
  • 4 slices of cheese (American, Cheddar, or Swiss)
  • 1 cup coleslaw mix
  • 1/4 cup smoky BBQ sauce
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
  • Vegetable oil for grilling

Instructions

  1. 1

Preheat a cast iron skillet or griddle over medium-high heat.

  2. 2

Grill the beef patties to your desired doneness, approximately 3 minutes per side for medium. Add cheese slices during the last minute of cooking to melt.

  3. 3

In a small bowl, mix together coleslaw mix and BBQ sauce. Set aside.

  4. 4

Brush the insides of the bao buns with softened butter and place them on the skillet or griddle. Grill for 1-2 minutes per side until golden brown and slightly crispy.

  5. 5

To assemble, place a beef patty with melted cheese in each bao bun, followed by a generous spoonful of the coleslaw mix, and finally a drizzle of smoky BBQ sauce.

Chef's Notes
