Ingredients

  • 2 blocks (14 oz each) extra
  • firm tofu
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 2 tbsp Szechuan peppercorns, coarsely ground
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp chili oil
  • 4 green onions, thinly sliced

Instructions

  1. Press the tofu for 30 minutes to remove excess moisture. Cut each block into 4 steaks.
  2. In a shallow dish, combine soy sauce, rice vinegar, ground Szechuan peppercorns, sugar, cornstarch, sesame oil, and chili oil. Mix well.
  3. Place the pressed tofu steaks in the marinade, ensuring they are fully submerged. Marinate for 20 minutes at room temperature.
  4. Preheat a grill or grill pan over medium high heat. Grill the tofu steaks for 4 5 minutes per side until they have nice grill marks and are slightly crispy on the outside but still tender inside.
  5. Serve immediately, garnished with green onions.

Chef’s Insight

The key to perfect grill marks is not moving the tofu until it has developed a nice sear, then gently flipping and repeating on the other side.

Notes

For an extra smoky flavor, add a drop of liquid smoke to the marinade.
