Ingredients

  • 400g ground beef 1 tbsp BBQ rub 2 tbsp BBQ sauce 4 slices cheddar cheese 4 hamburger buns 1 large onion, thinly sliced 1 cup all
  • purpose flour 1 cup milk 1 egg 1 cup breadcrumbs Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine the ground beef, BBQ rub, and half of the BBQ sauce. Shape into four patties and make a small indentation in the center of each patty.
  2. Heat your grill to medium high heat and cook the patties for 4 5 minutes per side or until cooked through. Top each patty with cheddar cheese during the last minute of cooking.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together milk and egg. In another bowl, place flour. Dip onion slices into the milk mixture, then dredge in flour.
  4. In a deep frying pan, heat oil to 350°F (175°C). Fry the onion rings in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 2 3 minutes per batch. Drain on paper towels.
  5. Assemble burgers with patties, cheese, BBQ sauce, onion rings, and your choice of toppings. Serve on hamburger buns.

Chef’s Insight

To add an extra layer of smokiness, soak wooden skewers in water for 30 minutes before using them to thread the onion slices for frying.

Notes

Make sure to monitor the oil temperature when frying the onion rings, as it can drop too low and cause them to become greasy.
