Instructions

  1. Preheat your grill or smoker to 300°F.
  2. In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar, paprika, cumin, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper (if using).
  3. Rub the pork shoulder with this spice mixture, making sure it is evenly coated.
  4. Place the seasoned pork shoulder on the grill or smoker, fat side up, and cook for 4 5 hours or until the internal temperature reaches 195°F when measured with a meat thermometer.
  5. In a saucepan, combine the BBQ sauce and bourbon. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the mixture comes to a simmer. Continue to simmer for 5 minutes.
  6. When the pork is done cooking, remove it from the grill or smoker and let it rest for 10 15 minutes. Then, shred the meat using two forks.
  7. Add the shredded pork back into the saucepan with the bourbon BBQ sauce and stir to combine.
